So How Happy Are You?

You might find Dr. Ruben's definition of happiness helpful. She believes that happiness comes to people when they are able to feel joy, are able to feel that life is good and they feel contented. They know deep down inside that they are happy.

A psychology professor, Dr. Edward Diener, from the University of Illinois has asked people to answer five questions to understand how happy they are. Here they are:

  1. In most ways my life is close to ideal.
  2. The conditions of my life are excellent.
  3. I am satisfied with my life.
  4. So far I have gotten the important things I want in life.
  5. If I could live my life over, I would change almost nothing.

Results Of The Happiness Test

Dr. Ruben feels if you answered "yes" to four or five questions, you are indeed a happy person. If you answered "yes" to only one, two or three questions, you need to learn how to bring more experiences into your life that would improve your happiness. You can begin by learning to be a good friend to yourself.

So, let's begin learning how to get happy right this minute!

  1. Begin by learning to appreciate every day that you are alive.
  2. Thank your brain for working so well that you know what day it is.
  3. Appreciate your ability to take a shower and enjoy doing it.
  4. Value the fact that you can walk and put one foot in front of the other.
  5. Pat yourself on the back for doing suggestions 1 thru 4.
What Else Can You Do To Get Happier?

You can push yourself to smile more. Even if you don't feel like smiling, smile anyway. Do you know you will never need plastic surgery if you smile a lot. You see, you use fewer facial muscles when you smile than you use when you frown. A smile wipes away those frown lines. Remember that wonderful song, "When you're smiling, when you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you." When you frown, you look crabby. You look unhappy. You look cross. Nobody wants to be with a crank. So broaden your circle of friends as you hear them say, "Wow. It's a pleasure to be with you now that you are smiling instead of complaining."
